About Pete

Pete has served as the Executive Director at Puente since 2009. From 2007 – 2009, he served as the Deputy Director, for the Democracy without Borders Foundation, located in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

He graduated from the H. John Heinz III School of Public Policy and Management at Carnegie Mellon University in 2006. He is a former Peace Corps volunteer (Guatemala ‘97 – 2000).

Pete also served two terms as President of the Amaranth Institute and currently is a Board member at Un Mundo and The Anna Seethaler Hospital.

Based on ten years of experience, Peter will share how Puente a la Salud Comunitaria (Bridges to Community Health) has utilized a participatory approach to engage more than 30 communities in the adoption of amaranth and the promotion of food sovereignty. The region has suffered from the dual burden of both malnourishment as well as the epidemic of diabetes and other chronic diseases. The talk will discuss how interventions take into account traditional practices and customs, such as self-organizing, collective action and agro-ecology.
